The Family Rooms is a practice dedicated to children, youth and families. Psychologist Dr Davinia Shannahan, and Family Therapist Ben Shannahan draw upon extensive experience offering a nurturing, optimistic and creative therapy space. We aim to help people to connect with and strengthen their skills and knowledges, discover new possibilities in life and relationships and to know how to go on in the face of struggles they are experiencing.
About us
When a person sees themselves (or another person) as the problem, they may become convinced that they need to take action against themselves (or another person). This creates fertile ground for shame, disconnection and frustrations to grow, can erode relationships and rob people of hope and dignity. We believe the problem is the problem - the person is not the problem.
In our work with families, we see our role to be helping family members and young people to connect with their own wisdom, playfulness, creativity and a sense of agency in tackling often painful and distressing problems that are interfering with life. We are also interested in understanding how people perceive what happens in the space between them and important others in their life and how problems are getting in the way of how they would like things to be.
We strive to honour the struggles people have been engaged in and support them to develop new understandings of the challenges they and others face, through addressing cultural and relational factors and social injustices that impact on people's lives. In the process, we help people connect with their skills, knowledges and what matters to them in life to foster a renewed sense of possibility. We are a queer friendly, neuro-affirming practice and welcome people of diverse sexualities, genders and cultures.
